Welcome to the KA photo and design blog!  This is all new to me.  Some of my photog friends have insisted that I start a blog so here I am giving it a whirl.  I’ll start with the basics.  A little information about what to expect in a photo session with me…
This information is featured on my website as well but I thought I would add it here for convenience.  Please contact me asap to sceduele a session at portfolio building prices (creative/session fee is waived) through the end of August.  Other great offers right now include the holiday mini sessions (see more recent posts for further info).

Session details:

My photography style is best described as lifestyle/photojournalistic. The goal is to capture you being you. I will guide and set up shots and then pretty much just catch you in action. Often times there is no set-up involved – real moments taken straight out of the everyday. Every photo session is a fun little adventure – we may hang out at your house…jump in the pool…walk around downtown…have a tea party…hit the skatepark…play at the farm…stop for ice cream…it’s all part of the photo session. We may go to a couple different places and experiment a bit with color and texture in our surroundings. Once you book your session, I will talk with you about different options for the location and style that will capture the spirit of your family. I am (for the most part) a natural light photographer, but also incorporate studio lighting when needed. Please remember when planning a session outdoors, early mornings or late evenings are the best time for optimal lighting. With newborn sessions, please call me before the birth of your child so I can plan my schedule accordingly. Then be sure to notify me once your little one arrives so I can insure a date is reserved for you. The best time to photograph newborns is within the first 2 weeks of life. The little babes tend to sleep more and curl up beautifully (a lovely quality for pictures in this precious phase).

What to wear:

Clothing choices are a very important element to getting portraits that you love. Clothing often helps to tell the story. If your daughter loves to twirl in her tutu or dress up in princess gowns/ tiaras/plastic slippers (just speaking from personal experience here) then we will certainly plan this assembly as part of the photo session. If your child loves music, get out the guitar and let’s rock! Some of my favorites: For the itty bitty ones – newborns and babies are best photographed in nothing – nada – just the beautiful bare skin they were born in . I have some fabulous blankets and other accessories that we can play with as well. For children – Textures work beautifully. Hats are fun. Accessories such as legwarmers, pettiskirts, cowboy boots, etc. can add interest. Please consider anything that tells the story about what your child loves…a football helmet, ballet outfit or tutu, a favorite dress-up costume…the list is endless! I have amazing props and accessories which are all available to you including pettiskirtss/tutus (various colors and sizes), birthday hats/shirts, and much more.  Take a look through my blog and the photo galleries on my website for a glimpse of the props/accessories that I have on hand. We can try different things so jot down a list of things that make your child happy and we will work together to style a session that reflects the personality inside. Also, when you book your session. I will have you complete a survey that helps me get to know your child and family and this will help with the session planning as well. If more than one subject is being photographed, please dress them in coordinating (not matching) outfits. Please contact me for advice (the styling of photo shoots is an important part of the creative process and I love conceptualizing fun ideas so I would love to work with you on this). You may also bring several different outfits to the session so I can help you choose which ones would work best.

update: For more information on what to wear, please see my more recent post on FAQS.

Length of session

I do not specify time while planning a session. As a mother, I know quite well that children need time to refuel and refresh, so I expect a need for breaks. We’ll likely experiment a bit (get ready to run, jump and play) and by the time it’s all said and done the session will likely have taken 2-4 hours. I prefer longer sessions because there is more opportunity for a variety of shots.  The more time I spend with your family, the more fun we have time for.  My plan is to keep shooting until I have a wide variety of fabulous images to put in your hands.

Session fee

The photo session fee is $150 for up to 4 people and is due at the time of booking. Each additional person after the initial four is $30. Included with your session is a pre-session survey and phone consultation, the photographer’s time and talent, the on-location photo session, and creative editing to each image in your private online gallery. Prints and digital images are purchased separately.

Ordering prints and digital images:

Payment is due in full at the time your order is placed. Prints will be delivered within three weeks of your order being placed, while canvases and other specialty items may take up to five weeks. The demand in today’s world for digital images (vs print) is high. As a photographer, I somewhat hate to lose control over the end result (print quality is so important and PRO lab results have such a WOW factor), but I also want to provide my clients the freedom to use images as needed. My solution is to offer digital images and provide a list of places for best print results.

Terms and conditions:

I reserve the right to use any picture in any form such as, but not limited to the use in advertising, reproduction and copyright. All images are copyrights of Kelly Anderson Photography and Design and it is illegal to copy, scan and print images. Prices are subject to change at any time (however prices are locked in at your time of booking).
